Weather Routing Benchmarks
A joint academic initiative providing high-fidelity environmental datasets and validation protocols for maritime weather-routing algorithms. With results published every year.

Benchmark 001
Just-in-Time Route Optimization for a Wind-Assisted Vessel
Participants build algorithms that route a commercial vessel equipped with rigid wing-sails across the North Atlantic. The goal is to minimize carbon intensity while honouring a strict just-in-time arrival window across variable winter weather conditions.

The Collaboration
The Weather Routing Benchmark is a strategic alliance between the IE School of Science & Technology and RI.SE — Research Institutes of Sweden. We bridge the gap between academic climatological modeling and industrial maritime logistics.
Our mission is to establish transparent, reproducible standards for evaluating routing efficiency in an era of wind-propulsion resurgence. And to publish the results of each yearly competition openly for the research community.
